Have you ever hidden your true self to people in fear that they would not accept you? Have you ever dreamed of a would-be self? I was bombarded with these questions upon rewatching the adventure of Amu and I begin to wonder… do I have a would-be self that I want so much to set free?
The answer to this question that had perplexed me for a while was ‘Yes’. With that in mind, I set off to review myself. Review those things that I want to be and know I could be. So far, I have personified two of those dreams into my own Guardian Characters — beings said to possess and guard our would-be selves.
The first one to be conceieved from my hard work was Maya. Maya is my Guardian Character born from my desire to become even better in regards to writing and drawing. The name means ‘artistic’ and ‘creative’. A suitable name for my Guardian Character.
The second one is her twin — Aria. She is borne from my desire to be able to play and compose music and songs that a lot of people would like, and the desire to become as adept with writing and drawing as I am with playing the violin — one of my most favorite instruments. Aria’s name is a musical term that means “any expressive melody, usually, but not always, performed by a singer”.
I doubt that these two are the only would-be selves that I have since at the moment I can think of another one. But, for the time being, allow me to debut my Guardian Characters — Maya and Aria.
The one on the left, the color red one is Maya, and the one on the right is Aria. It took me a while to finish up their concept and design and even longer still to draw them in the computer and color them as well. I used Photoshop CS4 as the main software for creating them.
Well, that’s about it for now. I’m going to create a new concept for my third Guardian Character. Until then, ja ne!
