Where does it come from? This quest, this need to solve life’s mysteries when the simplest of questions can never be answered. Why are we here? What is the soul? Why do we dream? Perhaps we’d be better off not looking at all. Not delving, not yearning. That’s not human nature. Not the human heart. That is not why we are here.
A couple of days ago, Micheal Jackson was finally laid to rest. It was a private ceremony where only close friends and family were allowed. That, of course, is a story to be told by someone else… that is not what this post would be all about.
The reason why Micheal’s name was brought up in this post of mine is because I suddenly remembered one of his songs, a favorite of mine which I am sure you are all familiar of, “Human Nature”. That song basically brought me to write this post.
What exactly does it means to be ‘Human’? Philosophers, Scientists, and men of great faith have tried to answer that query only to be divided in their answers. Everyone claims that this or that is what it means to be human, and I don’t plan to insist on my views about it nor do I plan to state all of their various understandings on the matter — complex or otherwise.
The reason why I ask is becuase I find myself in a quandary what with the situation of our world today. So many crimes occuring simulataneously around the globe and so few people actually caring about them without thinking: “What’s in it for me?”
In our country, The Pearl of the Orient. The Philippines. There seems to be a blurred line between what’s right and what’s wrong. The very leaders we are supposed to look up to and who are supposed to guide us to become a nation worth being proud of, has decided it best to look after their own skins rather than look after the needs of the people. The hold of money and power over those gifts and treasures that are not of materialistic value has grown so strong that the words: “Money is power” had really been engraved in everyone’s hearts so much so that people will now do anything to get that money into their pockets whether that money were truly meant for them or not.
Murders — endless and pointless continue to hit the news. People killing each other, people lying to each other, people talking about others behind their backs, are just a few things to note that have really dragged our social graces to hell (so to speak).
The desire and the need to help and to actually make a change for the better without asking for anything in returrn have been fluctuating. The desire to help out others anonymously seems to have declined as well.
What really is the real human nature? Is it one wrought about by violence and chaos? Or is it one with peace, love and unity — the trinity that many see now as cliched and often forgotten or misinterpreted?
Do we really need violence to fight against violence in order to bring about the peace and security that we crave for? Do we really need to stoop so low as to act like those whom we persecute rather than to humble ourselves and actually lend an ear and use peace to fight against war?
Do we really need to be at the top of the food chain to enjoy life? Or can we live in simplicity and see the treasures and gifts in the smallest of things?
Do we really need to have power just to see a change in our society happen? Or can we, even as ordinary people do extra ordinary things and make this world a better place?
I have my own sets of answers to this, as I believe everyone has them as well. Of course, there is a huge difference between having answers and acting on these answers.
2010 is almost upon us, and that, in my country, entails the voting season for our political leaders. It would once again be a season filled with promises that would either be broken or left half-fulfilled. A season when the line between truth and lines could and would be blurred. A season where we, the voters, do have a choice — a choice to make a big difference and a change for our country.
Should we once again shackle ourselves to the current administrations lies and deceitfulness? Shackle ourselves to their lackies who would continue their dirty work (Yes, I am not a fan of the current administration)? Or would we choose a different path? A path where this time, we can once again find something in our country worth believing in and worth being proud of?
