Day 17: The Saga Begins

Welcome to the seventeenth day of the one-hundred day song challenge!

I don’t know if it’s obvious from that single line alone but I am feeling crazy happy today.  You wanna know why?  Because I can’t wait until Sunday comes rolling in and we head off to Manila.  Finally, FINALLY we’re going to go back there and I could merrily go about raiding National Bookstore, Powerbooks, and Fully Booked…and maybe head to DataBlitz to get my hands on some new XBOX and PS3 titles if I still have enough money left. XD  Yeah, I know…the Book-Nerd Alert level has risen to Level 5.

But, that’s not the point of this post, is it?  This isn’t the post where I talk about how excited I am an how I can’t wait to go book shopping.  My mom’s not against the idea of me buying new books, although she’s not too happy about it since I am running out of space to put said books in on my humble, little, old bookshelf (though it isn’t probably ‘humble’ if you get to see the books displayed there).  Nope, this post isn’t about that.  This post is about music, about a song that would fit well with my current mood.

My current mood today though is crazy.  Not crazy in a ‘chainsaw massacre’ sort of way or the asylum sort of crazy.  Nope.  Not that kind of crazy at all.

The song I decided to post for today is ‘The Saga Begins‘, and no, it isn’t orchestral or anything.

Have you ever heard of the song American Pie?  You probably would have.  I mean, it’s a pretty old song.  Next question.  Have you ever watched, heard, or seen the Phantom Menace?  Yep, the first episode of the Star Wars Saga?  You know, the one where Ewan McGregor plays as the Obi-Wan Kenobi when he was still a Padawan and training under Qui-Gon (Quigon, or how you spell it) Jinn.  Yes, that one.  I knew you were gonna remember it once I mentioned Ewan McGregor…not that I’m implying anything about that.

You might be wondering why I asked those two questions.  Well, the reason is, this particular song is a mix of the two: American Pie meets The Phantom Menace.  And I am not joking about that.  It’s true.

What?  You don’t believe me?  Then watch the video below and see for yourself.

Pfft…Ahahahahaha…*Ahem*

See, I told you.  American Pie meets The Phantom Menace.  God, I still have tears on my eyes from hearing and watching that song.  Anyways, unless you haven’t figured it out it’s a parody sung by Weird Al Yalkovic.  Cool, huh?  This song was released from the 1999 album Running with Scissors, and later appearing on the compilation album entitled The Saga Begins.

Set to the tune of “American Pie,” “The Saga Begins” recounts the plot of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, from Obi-Wan Kenobi’s point of view. Yankovic gathered most of the information he needed to write the song from Internet spoilers. Although LucasFilm declined a request for an advance screening, Yankovic eventually attended a costly pre-screening for charity.[2]He did such an accurate job that after the pre-screening, he ended up making only very minor alterations. McLean not only approved the song but also has said since that his children have played it so much that he has a tendency to accidentally sing Yankovic’s lyrics when performing “American Pie” in concert. According to Yankovic’s official website, Lucasfilms’ official response to the song was, “You should’ve seen the smile on [George Lucas] face.” This is the second Star Wars song Weird Al has created, with the first being Yoda.

Weird Al’s songs are really, really funny and this one is my favorite out of all of them.

Oh, are you still looking for more funny stuff?  Well, check the following video (Jennifer Aniston’s Sex Tape–oh, quit it! It’s not like that!  Geez!) and laugh your heart out at the parodies.

Having said that…before I forget, below are the lyrics to this song.  Go and sing along with it and until the next post, dream on; fly on!

A long, long time ago
In a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
Could talk the federation in
To maybe cutting them a little slack
But their response, it didn’t thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas
Then met Jar Jar and Boss Nass
We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to Theed to see the Queen
We all wound up on Tatooine
That’s where we found this boy

Oh
My my this here Anakin guy
Maybe Vader someday later
Now he’s just a small fry
He left his home
And kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin’
“Soon I’m gonna be a Jedi”
“Soon I’m gonna be a Jedi”

Did you know this junkyard slave
Isn’t even old enough to shave
But he can use the Force, they say

Ahh, do you see him hitting on the queen
Though he’s just nine and she’s fourteen
Yeah, he’s probably gonna marry her someday

Well, I know he built C-3PO
And I’ve heard how fast his pod can go
And we were broke, it’s true
So we made a wager or two
He was a prepubescent flyin’ ace
And the minute Jabba started off that race
Well, I knew who would win first place
Oh yes, it was our boy

We started singin’
My my this here Anakin guy
Maybe Vader someday later
Now he’s just a small fry
And he left his home
And kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin’
“Soon I’m gonna be a Jedi”
“Soon I’m gonna be a Jedi”

Now we finally got to Coruscant
The Jedi Council we knew would want
To see how good the boy could be
So we took him there and we told the tale
How his midi-chlorians were off the scale
And he might fulfill that prophecy
Oh the Council was impressed of course
Could he bring balance to the Force?
They interviewed the kid
Oh, training they forbid
Because Yoda sensed in him much fear
And Qui-Gon said “Now listen here”
“Just stick it in your pointy ear”
“I still will teach this boy”

He was singin’
My my this here Anakin guy
Maybe Vader someday later
Now he’s just a small fry
And he left his home
And kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin’
“Soon I’m gonna be a Jedi”
“Soon I’m gonna be a Jedi”

We caught a ride back to Naboo
‘Cause Queen Amidala wanted to
I frankly would’ve liked to stay
We all fought in that epic war
And it wasn’t long at all before
Little hotshot flew his plane and saved the day
And in the end some Gungans died
Some ships blew up and some pilots fried
A lot of folks were croakin’
The battle droids were broken
And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he’s toast
Well, I’m still here and he’s a ghost
I guess I’ll train this boy

And I was singin’
My my this here Anakin guy
Maybe Vader someday later
Now he’s just a small fry
And he left his home
And kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin’
“Soon I’m gonna be a Jedi”
“Soon I’m gonna be a Jedi”

We were singin’
My my this here Anakin guy
Maybe Vader someday later
Now he’s just a small fry
And he left his home
And kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin’ “Soon I’m gonna be a Jedi”

There is nothing more that I enjoy doing than reading books and writing. I'm kind of a nerd like that, XD. I have been writing for 7 years and am the author of the YA novel "Winged: The Awakening" and "Winged: The Unraveling". Also, a YouTuber dealing with video games and gaming.
