Day 87: Like My Mother Does

After months and months of waiting.  After thousands of auditioners and hundreds of songs, it all came down to today.  The crowd waited in anticipation for Ryan Seacrest to proclaim the winner of American Idol.  Who will succeed Lee Dewyze as the new American Idol?  Is it the Southern Bell Lauren Alaina who had wowed the judges in Day 1 of the audition and made Steven Tyler proclaim that for him she is his American Idol?  That she is ‘The One’?  Or is it the boy next door Scotty McCreery who had started off in American Idol with just one song in mind; who had a heart-wrenching day in Hollywood week when he failed to stand up for JayCee and when he was asked over and over again to “audition” to the other contestants during the group round?

One-hundred-and-twenty-two million votes came in.  And from that number of votes, it was rumored that only two-million separated the American Idol from the runner-up.  As it so happens, Scotty won the title.

Compared to how the previous AI crowning moments had been, this wasn’t one of the most emotional results show in the whole Idol history.  I still believe that that crown of “Most Emotional Finale Results Show” would go to Kelly Clarkson the first American Idol, Carrie Underwood the first Country singer to win the title, and David Cook the first male American Idol to ever be successful after winning the title.  That doesn’t mean that this finale that we had witnessed wasn’t memorable.  It was and Team McLaina along with the Alainers and McCreerians will attest to that after we all witnessed what most of us McLainers were waiting for–a kiss between Scotty and Lauren.

You would have thought that these three groups who stood united against all American Idol odds would be talking about Scotty winning.  We did talk about that.  But what really made everyone giddy was the kiss.  Yes, they kissed!

So, yeah…even though Lauren didn’t win.  It seems like both of them won and both of them would surely have a bright future.

But, before the whole results show, Lauren and Scotty both sang their last three songs the day/night before and that is where I got the song for our eighty-seventh day.  This song is the final song Lauren sang in the competition and is entitled Like My Mother Does (which is also Lauren’s first single, originally sung by Kristy Lee Cook) and is one of the most emotional songs of the season, especially when Lauren walked up to her mother and sang it to her.  There wasn’t a dry-eyed spectator in the Nokia Theater that night and I would have bet that Lauren had won America over with that song.  I won’t hide the fact that I almost cried at that point as I felt the emotion of Lauren’s song and the words of the song itself.

Music isn’t just sounds, it is a story of a life…and that is why I love country music.  That is why I love both Lauren and Scotty.  Because country music tells that story–the story of life and it makes it easier to say things through songs such as this.

Often times we forget how much our mothers give up for us and this song as well as Lauren’s performance reminded me just how special mothers are.

Below are the lyrics to this wonderful song.  Until the next post, dream on; fly on!

People always say I have a laugh
Like my mother does
Guess that makes sense
She taught me how to smile when things get rough

I’ve got her spirit
And she’s always got my back
When I look at her,
I think I wanna be just like that!

When I love, I give it all I got!
Like my mother does
When I’m scared, I bow my head and pray!
Like my mother does
When I feel weak, and un-pretty!
I know I’m beautiful and strong!
Because, I see my self
Like my mother does

I never met a stranger,
I can talk to anyone
Like my mother does
I let my temper fly
But she can walk away, when she’s had enough

She sees everybody, for who they really are
I’m so thankful for her guidance,
She’s helped me get this far

When I love, I give it all I got!
Like my mother does
And when I’m scared, I bow my head and pray!
Like my mother does
When I feel weak, and un-pretty!
I know I’m beautiful and strong!
Because, I see myself,
Like my mother does!

She’s a rock!
She is grace!
She’s an angel!
She’s…
My heart and soul!
She does it all!

When I love! I give it all I got!
Like my mother does
And when I’m scared! I bow my head and pray!
Like my mother does
When I feel weak, and un-pretty!
I know I’m beautiful and strong!
Because, I see myself,
Like my mother does!

I hear people saying… I’m starting to look
Like my mother does…
