Day 1: New World

Welcome to the first day of our hundred day of music challenge.  I’m pretty excited about this new cycle for this challenge and I’m pretty happy with the song I have picked up to open said challenge.

I am a fan of video game franchises that not only have jaw-dropping graphics and gameplay systems but also a compelling and strong story.  I suppose that it is a given, after all, I enjoy reading and writing.  I am passionate about it even.  A game can only go so far without a great story to hook gamers.  Granted, casual gamers would probably opt for some time-wasting and mind-blanking kind of game.  Unless I am really, really bored with nothing to do–read, or write–that’s the only time I actually try games that does not compel you to think.

The above paragraph is not, in any way, a segue to divert attention from one topic to another.   Au contraire.  The talk about video games is very much related for my choice of music for today because the song I picked is one from a game’s official soundtrack.

A great atmosphere can make or break a game.  It’s pretty important that a song captures the emotion of the game as much as possible, whether the song is merely used as a background music or if it a theme song of some kind.  A poor song choice can break the mood of a particular scene in a game.  It’s common sense.

I am a fan of the Final Fantasy franchise, but not in the sense that I am ga-ga over the game, it’s characters or whatnot.  I am a fan of the story of the character development, although, I did have a massive gripe against the battle system from the Final Fantasy XIII game.  Still, I love that particular game’s story and it’s main character, Lightning.

Recently, SE (Square Enix) released a sequel to said game.  The sequel, Final Fantasy XIII-2, is great.  I should know, I’ve been playing it ever since I bought it two weeks ago.  Unlike it’s predecessor, FFXIII-2 features Lightning’s sister, Serah and a boy from a distant, dystopian future, Noel.  The story revolves around paradoxes, time traveling, and everything that has to do with those two topics.  I won’t spoil what the game’s about.  You can easily google that and, chances are, you’re pretty familiar with the franchise so…yeah.

Anyways, FFXIII-2’s official theme song is great and it actually captures the conviction of Serah for her journey.  You can almost imagine that it’s Serah who’s singing.  The song is, however, sung by a fellow kababayan: Charice.

To tell you guys the truth, I wouldn’t have been as excited about the game (even though it is related to FFXIII, being its sequel and all) as I was, if I hadn’t heard beforehand that Charice would be singing the song, New World.  Of course, I can also say that I probably wouldn’t have clamored to get my hands on Charice’s Infinity album had I not heard that New World was in that album and that it is, in fact, the said theme song from the said game.

Granted, the song could be couple’s song, and being St. Valentine’s Day, I suppose people might think I chose this song on purpose.  However, that is not the case.  Like I’ve said, I view this song as a theme song that encompasses Serah’s conviction, her feelings on her journey.  I like to think that this song talks about how much she misses Lightning who, after surviving the previous game, suddenly ends up missing and presumed by friends (except first Serah, then Snow and Hope) to be dead or trapped inside the pillar that is holding up Cocoon (once again, if you are confused about this, play the game or google to learn and understand more).

Serah went on a journey in search of Lightning and, along the way, she and Noel uncovers more paradoxes that they soon learn are link with the future and the world, as well as humanity’s destruction.  The strength that Serah has, that unwavering faith in her sister and in Snow and Noel is something that this song hints to without exactly binding it so that the song is only meant to such an interpretation.  As I have said, it is my own personal interpretation.

Anyways, Charice did a superb job with the song.  Her voice, like always, is powerful.  She truly is a great artist, a great singer.  You can be sure that other songs she had sung would be featured again in this challenge.  For now, however, enjoy the song through the Youtube video above.  If you loved or liked the song (which I did–love, I mean), be sure to check out iTunes or your local music store to buy the album, either the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Official Soundtrack or Charice’s Infinity album.

Below are the lyrics to this awesome song:

Staring the stars, feeling the winds every time
I cannot stop thinking of you, since you’ve been gone away from here
Shedding the tears, crying out loud for once
Cause you are such a precious part of me
And there’s no one who’ll fill my broken heart

Oh but now, I have realized
The reason why I live in this world,
Even you have left me here alone,
I found the way where I can get hope for the future

Baby, I’m gonna see the new world
With nothing but the love you gave me
Only thing I can do, is to trust the time we shared
Baby, I’m gonna go to the new world
With nothing but the strength you gave me
There’s nothing to be afraid of,
I know your love will lead me where I should be
Even if it is dark and hard time for me,
I don’t wanna give up my hope

Having a dream, basking in the sun everyday
I’m starting to thank that I’m still here,
Though the pain of loss still hurts me
Making me smile, making me laugh many times
Everything is gentle to me, because you are making it so

Then now I have realized the reason why I live in this world
It’s not to lose what I truly need
I will make, sure to build the beautiful days together

Baby, I’m gonna see the new world
With nothing but the love you gave me
Only thing I can do, is to trust the time we shared
Baby, I’m gonna go to the new world
With nothing but the strength you gave me
There’s nothing to be afraid of,
I know your love will lead me where I should be
Even if it is dark and hard time for me,
I don’t wanna give up my hope

Pray for all the things in this world
And believe in the power of our love
Sing a song of tomorrow
Now we are not alone
And we come to life again
A new day will come to you, for you and me

Baby, I’m gonna see the new world
With nothing but the love you gave me
Only thing I can do, is to trust the time we shared
Baby, I’m gonna go to the new world
With nothing but the strength you gave me
There’s nothing to be afraid of,
I know your love will lead me where we should be
Even if it is dark and hard time for us,
I don’t wanna give up our hope

I would also like to note that there is a Japanese version to this song which is sung by Fukui Mai.  Unfortunately, I am only featuring one song a day so that means, Charice and the English version of the song gets the spotlight.  You can check out the Japanese version on iTunes, however.

There is nothing more that I enjoy doing than reading books and writing. I'm kind of a nerd like that, XD. I have been writing for 7 years and am the author of the YA novel "Winged: The Awakening" and "Winged: The Unraveling". Also, a YouTuber dealing with video games and gaming.
